CrossFit is known for its high-intensity, full-body workouts, combining strength training, endurance, and conditioning. I’d heard a lot about it, but as someone more comfortable with traditional gym routines, I wasn’t sure where to start. But after stepping into Level Up Gyms for my first CrossFit class, I’m glad I started here, and I’ll definitely be back.

What to expect

Energy levels:

CrossFit at Level Up is fast-paced and high-energy – everyone’s there to work hard, and the coaches keep that momentum going throughout the session. The class moves fast, keeping you engaged, and the intensity is perfect for pushing your limits while still being tailored to all levels.

Class setup & format:

The class starts with a dynamic warm-up, including mobility exercises and three minutes on the SkiErg. Then, it’s into the workout: three rounds of different exercises. The class includes a mix of weightlifting, cardio, and bodyweight exercises. We used the functional rig, pulled up on the bars, worked with sandbags, and pushed ourselves on the rower. The layout is spacious, and the lighting gives you just enough focus to stay in the zone while you work hard.

Duration & flow:

The class lasts around 60 minutes and is broken up into the warm-up, high-intensity rounds, and a cool-down. With short breaks between the rounds, it’s a solid workout that keeps you moving and feeling challenged the entire time.

My highlight:

What stood out to me was how accessible CrossFit was, even as a beginner. The exercises were broken down into three levels of difficulty, so no matter your experience, there’s always a version of the movement that works for you.

Instructor style

The instructor, Courtney, was motivating and really clear with her instructions. She guided us through each movement with ease, explaining the technique and purpose behind each one. I appreciated how hands-on she was, offering corrections and adjustments to ensure we were getting the most out of each exercise.

Courtney created a supportive environment where every member could push themselves, regardless of their fitness level. Her clear instructions and encouragement kept me focused throughout the class.

Community

Class size:

The class size was perfect, not too big, not too small. It created an intimate atmosphere where the instructor could give individual attention while still fostering that group energy.

Vibe:

The group was focused but supportive. It wasn’t overly competitive, but everyone was motivated to challenge themselves and each other. The energy in the room was definitely contagious, and everyone was there to work hard and enjoy the process.

There was a sense of camaraderie in the class. People were encouraging each other without any pressure, and it made the class feel inclusive and fun, especially for someone like me who was new to CrossFit.

Class format

Movements Involved:

The class included pull-ups, sandbags, the functional rig, SkiErg, and rowing – a mix of functional movements and cardio that challenges both strength and endurance. You’ll feel the burn in your arms, legs, and core. It’s a full-body workout that targets every muscle group.

Intensity:

The intensity is high, but it’s manageable. The short breaks between rounds give you just enough time to catch your breath before diving back in. CrossFit at Level Up is great for building strength and stamina, whether you’re a beginner or a CrossFit pro.

What to wear/bring

Clothing recs:

Wear something supportive and stretchy, as you’ll be moving a lot. A good pair of training shoes with grip is essential for the varied movements.

Essentials to pack:

Don’t forget your water bottle and a towel to wipe off the sweat. You’ll definitely need a shower towel after, as it’s a high-intensity session.

How to book

Book your class in advance through the Privilee app. Arrive at least 10 minutes early to get set up and ready to go. This gives you time to warm up and ask the instructor any questions if you’re new to the class.

Final thoughts

Level Up’s CrossFit class exceeded my expectations. It was challenging but accessible, and the instructor was incredibly supportive. Whether you’re new to CrossFit or an experienced athlete, this class offers a fun and motivating environment to push yourself.

My top tip: Don’t be intimidated, CrossFit is for everyone. The variations in the movements allow you to work at your level and still get a great workout.
